World-class experience for MJT Team Canada down under

 

October 4, 2023 - (Vancouver, BC) – Players on Canada’s number one junior golf tour, the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, recently returned from proudly representing Canada in Australia’s Jack Newton Junior Golf (JNJG) International Junior Classic, a major junior golf event in the Southern Hemisphere. This was the 13thappearance for MJT Team Canada, co-captained by PGA of Canada Professionals, Luke Rundell and Rachelle Rundell.

The tournament showcased the participation of more than 450 competitors hailing from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Samoa, Singapore, and the United States. Spanning four days from September 26 to 29, the format encompassed both team-based and individual competition at the picturesque Cypress Lakes Golf and Country Club in Hunter Valley, NSW.

The Individual Boys Championship boasted a very large and highly competitive field. The title of Individual Boys Champion was claimed by Riley Millers from New South Wales, whose remarkable four-day performance included rounds of 69, 72, 70, and 68 for an impressive nine-under total score of 279. Spencer Shropshire from Ramara, Ontario, earned the distinction of low Canadian after he posted rounds of 69, 74, 73, and 74 (290) to place tie 13th. His Canadian teammates Cooper Joyce from Etobicoke, ON, and Oakley Mayner from Kelowna, BC, delivered commendable efforts, posting scores of 77, 78, 72, 75 (302) and 76, 77, 77, 74 (304), respectively, followed by Russell Quinn from St. Albert, Alberta, (79, 83, 73, 74=309), Ethan Frost from Barrie, Ontario, (74, 71, 86, 79 =310), Brady Durkin from Sylvan Lake, Alberta, 80, 76, 84, 85 =325)  and Will Heavisides from Calgary, Alberta, (88, 80, 79, 79 =326).

“We were treated exceptionally well by the Australians and the tournament offered invaluable international exposure to our young golfers,” said MJT Team Canada Co-Captain, Luke Rundell. It is really great being a part of the MJT, giving these kids and our members opportunities like this is amazing.”

About the MJT: The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is Canada’s number one Junior Golf Tour as well as the only national junior tour run exclusively by PGA of Canada Professionals and the ‘Road to College Golf’ in Canada.
