| THREE PLAYERS WIN INTERNATIONAL SPOTS AT MJT’S PERDUE OASIS EVENT PERDUE, SK: Blustery prairie winds proved challenging in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s final stop in Saskatchewan this season at Perdue Oasis Golf Resort in Perdue on June 21st and 22nd, where junior golfers from Alberta, Manitoba, and all over Saskatchewan competed. Up for grabs were spots into two international events – the CAN-USA Team Matches in Tempe, AZ, and the Canada International Friendship Cup (CIFC) in British Columbia.
Despite Mother Nature’s curve ball on day two of the competition making birdie’s few and far between, Jesse Gibson, 16, of Saskatoon, SK, finished two strokes ahead of the field to come in with the tournament’s overall low score, claiming the Boys 14-16 division title and the spot to Arizona - his third international exemption this year on the MJT. Gibson shot 68-74 (142). Runner-up in the Boys 14-16 division was Aaron Cockerill, 16, of Stony Mountain, MB, who shot 70-74 (144), just one stroke ahead of Jordan Arndt, 15, of Furdale, SK (71-74=145).

The MJT Cattermole Group Classic featured a full field of competitive junior golfers vying for division titles as well as exemptions into the Texas Junior Masters in San Antonio, TX, this August.Day one enjoyed decent weather while day two saw the wind come into play on the links-style course, which wreaked havoc with some scores. Local Steven Nakajima, 17, who finished one stroke off the lead with a 74 on day one, played solid enough on day two to improve by two strokes and claim the overall low score for the field. Nakajima shot 74-72 (146), securing a spot to Texas. “It was one of my best ball striking weeks I've had in a while, and to add to that, my putting wasn’t too bad either,’ he said. “Winning low overall and a spot to Texas makes me feel like all of my hard work has finally paid off. ERIC BANKS CASHES IN WITH SECOND WIN ON MJT AT TRUROTRURO, NS: The second of three tournaments in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT Atlantic Canada Series played out at The Mountain Golf and Country Club in Truro, NS, on June 21st and 22nd, coming to a dramatic finish on Sunday with a four-hole playoff deciding two of the three international exemptions up for grabs. The exemptions were to the Texas Junior Masters in San Antonio, TX, the CKG Tour World Championship in Myrtle Beach, SC, and the Canada International Friendship Cup (CIFC) in British Columbia. | After 16 holes, there was a three-way tie between Eric Banks, 15, of Truro, Craig Dale, 17, of Truro, and Mark Canfield, 17, of Malagash, NS. Banks and Dale birdied hole 17 to pull one shot ahead of Canfield. On 18, Banks' tee shot on the Par 3 missed the green left, but Dale then proceeded to hit his in the hazard right of the green. Dale was able to find his ball, and play a pitch just onto the green. Banks' chip shot came up about 10 feet short, and Canfield’s chip for birdied rolled narrowly past the hole. Dale proceeded to three-putt for double bogey, while Banks calmly rolled in his putt for the victory. So after opening on day two with a stellar front nine of 33, Banks managed to continue his solid play on the back nine to finish with a two-under-par score of 69, capturing the low overall score, the Boys 14-16 division title, and a spot in the Texas Junior Masters. | Highlights: Press Release, Top Finishers, Long Drive, KP and Prize Winners Full Results | Photo Gallery
| HALL REPEATS AS MJT CHAMPION WITH SPOT TO TEXAS JUNIOR MASTERS ALTON, ON: The Scottish style links course of Osprey Valley in Alton proved to be as challenging as ever this Father’s Day weekend for the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) players on June 14th and 15th. Mild weather with very little wind factor was at least on their side as the field battled pot bunkers and fescue rough not to mention each other to secure spots to the Texas Junior Masters in San Antonio, TX, and the CKG Tour World Championships in Myrtle Beach, SC. | Chris Hall, 18, of Mississauga, ON, repeated as champion of the Boys 17 and up division with his second win on the MJT, also claiming low overall and an exemption into the Texas Junior Masters this August with his total score of 145. He started out strong finishing day one with a score of 71; day two proved to be slightly more challenging finishing with a 74, but it was still enough to hold on to the top spot. “It was a battle on the back nine. Coming down the stretch I was trying to stay focused,” he said. “Making birdie on the last hole was key. It feels great to win because I have worked hard to get here.” Highlights: Press Release, Top Finishers, Long Drive, KP and Prize Winners Full Results | Photo Gallery | | | |
KALLIS CONTINUES WINNING STREAK ON MJT AT CLARESHOLM 13-year-old Teron shoots low round of the day CLARESHOLM, AB – A full field of junior golfers on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) enjoyed the best day for golf in Southern Alberta in weeks – maybe for the year – on Father’s Day at The Bridges at Claresholm Golf Course in Claresholm, where the two-day MJT Macleod Savings and Credit Union Classic played out over the weekend.
There was good scoring all around despite standing water everywhere on the saturated golf course that will play host to the provincial junior boys championship next month. Red Deer’s Carson Kallis, 15, continued his strong play on the MJT and shot 68-72 (140) to win low overall score and the Boys 14-16 division title by three shots over Scott Malo, 16, of Calgary. Malo shot 70-73 (143) and Brett Greiner, 16, also of Calgary, posted back-to-back even par rounds of 72 to finish third. DEJA VOUS FOR SMITH AT MJT’S FINORA STOP IN SWIFT CURRENT | SWIFT CURRENT, SK: Finora, a substantial Canadian-based supplier and processor of lentils, peas, mustard and beans, sponsored the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s stop in Swift Current over the Father’s Day weekend, where local Taylor Smith, 19, was the cream of the crop. The tournament, which played out on both Chinook and Elmwood Golf Courses, was a double qualifier for the Texas Junior Masters in San Antonio, TX, and the CKG Tour World Championships in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Smith, of Swift Current, blasted a four-under-par 68 on day two to close at 140 total score, taking the Boys 17 and up division title and low overall. It was deja vous for the MJT veteran, whose first MJT win was in Swift Current in 2002. Smith, who cited his highlight as his long eagle putt on the 15th hole, said “The MJT has helped me develop consistency in my game. I’ve learned what it takes to compete and play against some of the better players in Western Canada.” Second place in this division was Brennan Rumancik, 17, of Maple Creek, SK, who shot 73-74 (147). Jordan Johns, 17, of Fort Qu’Appelle, SK, came in third with scores of 78-72 (150). | Highlights: Press Release, Top Finishers, Long Drive, KP and Prize Winners Full Results | Photo Gallery
HELGESON AND MINION JOIN MJT TEAM CANADA AT SOUTH INTERLAKE QUALIFIER WARREN, MB: The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s double qualifier on Father’s Day weekend at the South Interlake Golf and Country Club in Warren, MB, proved to be another weekend of outstanding golf in decent weather conditions with players vying for spots on MJT Team Canada to both the Scotland Kingdom of Fife Matches in St. Andrews, U.K. and to the International Junior Golf Invitational (IJGI) in Cuernavaca, Mexico.
Brock Helgeson, 17 of Balmertown, ON, came out to win this tournament showing tremendous focus throughout both days. Helgeson finished day one with a leading score of 76 thanks to a 30 foot putt on hole 16 for eagle, and then blew away the competition on day two with a “take no prisoners” score of 70, placing him four strokes ahead of the entire field with the Boys 17 and up title, overall low score in the tournament, and a spot on the team to Scotland. “Playing on the MJT gives me the experience I need and helps me get used to the pressure,” said Helgeson, who clearly demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure in Warren this weekend. Finishing second in the Boys 17 and up category was Burke Wiebe, 17, of Winnipeg, MB, with scores of 77-76 (153), while third place went to Daniel Moar, 17, of Portage la Prairie, MB (78-76=154).
