Sky's the limit, shoots 7-under par for victory in MJT Mini Tour’s Innisfail stop

 
Innisfail Golf Club in Innisfail, Alberta, site of the 2024 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, hosted a one-day MJT Mini Tour event for 12U golfers on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour on July 14, where a deep field came out to compete, vying for titles in six divisions and the chance to qualify for the MJT Mini Tour National Championship in British Columbia this August. 

Posting eight birdies and two eagles to finish at seven-under par was nine-year-old Shane Sky of Foothills, AB, whose performance in MJT Boys 9-10 was nothing short of amazing.  Another highlight was a fine performance by 11-year-old Sedona Weitz, of Foothills M.D., AB, as she won her third MJT Girls 11-12 title this season by three strokes. Other notable scores resulted in division wins for Ain Lee, 10, of Sylvan Lake, AB, in MJT Girls 10-11 (76), Mika Bamhra, 8, of Calgary, AB, in MJT Boys 8U (83), Jacob Brunette, 12, of Calgary, AB, (79) and Ava Deschamps, 7, of Calgary, AB, in MJT Girls 8U (123).
 
Top scorers who are not already exempt qualified for the MJT Mini Tour National Championship and are listed below along with their scores and quotes from division winners. Full results, as well as results from the Closest-to-the-Pin competition, are posted on the MJT website.

Sedona Weitz, 11, of Foothills M.D., AB, claimed her third victory of the year, earning the MJT Girls 11-12 Division title and Low Overall honours.  Weitz was trying to take it ‘one step at a time.’ She added, “Mentally, I told myself that, and physically, I worked on my putting.”

Winning for the fourth time this season in the MJT Girls 9-10 Division was 10-year-old Ain Lee of Sylvan Lake, AB, who posted four birdies and an eagle on the demanding Innisfail course.  “Get enough sleep and have a balanced sleep schedule,” said Lee on her preparation for the event. “Honestly, I struggled today on the last few holes, and I thought of ways to recover.”

The lone player in the MJT Girls 8U Division was Ava Deschamps, 7, of Calgary, AB, who posted 123 on the incredibly tight Innisfail Golf Course.

Mika Bhamra, 8, of Calgary, AB, claimed his first victory on the MJT Mini Tour circuit, winning the MJT Boys 8U Division title with a tidy seven shot victory.  When asked about his preparation for the course, Bhamra said he ‘practiced on the range and focused on recovery shots.’

Posting a tournament low seven-under par from the forward tees was 9-year-old Shane Sky of Foothills, AB, who walked away with the MJT Boys 9-10 Division title for his third victory of the season.  “I just tried not to three putt today,” said Sky.  “I tried to play my game from tee to green today.”

In the MJT Boys 11-12 Division, 12-year-old Jacob Brunette of Calgary claimed the title by five shots over his nearest rival for his first win of the 2024 season.  In speaking of preparation for this event, Brunette said, “I tried to practice a lot and when I hit a bad shot, I tried to forget about it.”
