Stahl seals victory with 10 birdies at MJT PLYR Series stop in Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake, AB – (July 29, 2020) – Six division titles were up for grabs in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s MJT PLYR Series at Meadowlands Golf Club at Sylvan Lake, Alberta, on July 27 and 28, where a wait-listed field of players competed in hot sunshine under new MJT health and safety protocols.

The birdie train rolled through the MJT Juvenile Boys Division which saw an exciting finish. 15-year old Bradin Stahl, of Priddis Greens, AB, made 10 birdies, seven which came on the second day, to win his division’s Hoselton trophy and PLYR Golf Low Overall by a single shot. Stahl, who finished the event with scores of 74 and 71 (145), said, “My putting carried me to victory. I made a couple of long putts to stay in it.” Camrose, AB, player Rory Wutzke, 16, finished runner-up with scores of 74 and 72 (146).

The PLYR Golf Low Overall Girls score for the event was captured by Grace Bell in the MJT Girls 15-19 Division. The 17-year old golfer from Calgary, AB, fired consistent rounds of 73 and 74 (147) to win in convincing fashion. “Hitting the fairway was key for me,” mentioned Bell. “I found that when I put the ball in the [fairway], I was able to convert on some birdies.”

Coming back from a six-shot deficit in the MJT Junior Boys Division was 17-year old Carson Rody. The Calgary resident struggled on the first day opening with a round of 81 but turned up the heat on day two carding a three-under 69 (150) including four birdies and one bogey. “I just stayed patient and waited for my chances,” commented Rody. “It feels great to play solid after struggling.”

13-year old Jayden Brar held on for the win in the MJT Bantam Boys Division after shooting 72 and 77 (149). The Calgary junior golfer came up clutch playing his final seven holes on the second day at even par to win the division by a single shot. “I kept a smile on my face,” commented Brar, who attributed some of his win to his positive mindset. “A win always feels great, but it was even better to win making a five-foot putt on the last hole.” Calgary residents Sebastian Berube (76, 74 – 150), 14 and Brett Jones (74, 76 – 150), 14, finished tied for second in the division.

14-year old Jayla Kucy, of Camrose, fired 75 and 76 (151) to win the MJT Girls U15 Division. With her performance at Meadowlands Golf Club at Sylvan Lake, Kucy picked up her second 2020 MJT title. “I made all my putts within eight feet,” mentioned Kucy. “It feels good to win and hopefully I keep playing well.”

The MJT Peewee Boys Division witnessed a tight contest right to the very end. Brady Durkin, 12, of Sylvan Lake, carded scores of 80 and 78 (158) to win by a single shot after starting the second day two shots behind the leader and playing his final six holes two-under par to complete the comeback. “I stayed in my own game,” commented Durkin. “I didn’t worry about what my competitors were doing.” Brae Rogalczyk, 12, of Innisfail, AB, finished the division in second place with scores of 84 and 75 (159).
