Playoff and qualifiers highlight MJT Mini Tour Spring Series at Musqueam

Another talented field of 86 young golfers aged five to 12 competed on Canada’s number one-played Junior Golf Tour on May 5, in the non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Mini Tour at Musqueam Golf Club in Vancouver, BC. The popular event saw players competing in six divisions for titles and select direct exemptions into four exclusive qualifiers: the FCG Callaway World Championship in Rancho Mirage, California, the MJT Mini Tour National Championship at Tsawwassen Springs, Tsawwassen, BC, the MJT Order of Merit (OOM) Invitational at Quilchena Golf and Country Club in Richmond, BC and the World Stars Junior Golf Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“Musqueam Golf Club is in one of the most desired locations on the MJT BC Mini Tour,” said Lee J.H. Lee, MJT Tournament Director. “The course is relatively short, and it gives a chance to manage the course with finesse shots rather than overpower it with a driver.”

It took a playoff to determine the MJT Boys 11-12 division winner after both Jack Guo, of West Vancouver, BC, and David Zhang, 12, of Vancouver, BC, had both tied for the lead with an excellent score of 60. Guo triumphed to take the title. The MJT Girls low overall score from the furthest tees was carded by Quorra Mi, 11, of Burnaby, BC, who won the MJT Girls 11-12 title with a fine score of 69. Stellar results were also recorded by the other division winners, namely Annabel Zhao, 8, of Richmond, BC, in MJT Girls 8U (82), Chloe Chu, 10, of Delta, BC, in MJT Girls 9-10 (69), Edward Yu, 8, of Vancouver, BC, in MJT Boys 8U (70), and Ivan Yang, 10, of Surrey, BC, in MJT Boys 9-10 (65).

The division winners in both MJT Boys and Girls 9-10 and 8U earned direct exemptions into the FCG Callaway World Championship this July, while every division winner qualified for the season-ending MJT Mini Tour National Championship this August. In addition, the top two finishers per division qualified for the MJT Mini Tour OOM Invitational at Quilchena Golf Club in Richmond, BC, on May 25, while runners-up were invited to the World Stars Junior Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The qualified players, top finisher scores and quotes from division winners are noted below. Closest to the Pin and Long Drive winners are posted on the MJT website here.

The next MJT Mini Tour event in the province is the MJT Mini Tour at Cheam Mountain Golf Club in Chilliwack on June 19.  For more information, or to view upcoming British Columbia MJT Mini Tour schedule, please visit the website here.
