Sawchuk shortlisted for MJT Team Canada to Australia

Prince Albert, Saskatchewan – (June 4, 2012) – Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) players were treated to a beautiful first day with warm temperatures at the MJT Saskatchewan Series at Cooke Municipal Golf Club in Prince Albert this past weekend, but on the second day winds gusted up to 60 km per hour, giving local players the advantage as the tough greens were quick and very difficult to read. Round one of the two-day tournament, which was also a qualifier for shortlisting players for MJT Team Canada to the Srixon International Junior Classic in New South Wales, Australia, was highlighted by Bryan Matkowski, who scored a rare double-eagle on his third hole of the day!

14-year old Cory Sawchuk of Prince Albert was low overall, claiming the MJT Boys 14-16 gold medal and qualifying for a shortlisted position for Australia this October, as his spot on MJT Team Canada will be pending the outcome of the other qualifiers across the country. “I was thinking just hit smart, safe shots coming in,” Sawchuk said. “Cory (Selander) and I were neck and neck after the front nine so I was planning one step ahead for the next shot.” Runners-up in this division were Cory Selander, 15, of Prince Albert and Anthony Neufeld, 16, of Riverside Estates, SK, who finished tied at 152.

The MJT Saskatchewan Series at Cooke Municipal Boys 17-19 title went to Daegan Wall of Regina, SK, who won with rounds of 73-78. Wall, 17, “was thinking about finishing as strong as possible. I wanted to win overall (and the shortlisted spot) but fell short.” Finishing runner-up was Leighton Bearchell, 17, of Saskatoon, SK, who carded solid rounds of 73-80, while third place was a tie at 154 total score between Saskatoon’s Matthew Erickson, 18, who shot 79-75 and Brett Henry, 19, of Prince Albert, (74-80).

Kade Johnson, 13, of Yorkton, SK, took home the MJT Boys 13 & Under gold medal after firing rounds of 75-81 to edge off a hard-charging Noah Kozack, 12, of Regina (83-81). Finishing third in the division was Kristian Houk, 12, of North Battleford, SK, who carded 85-83.

Kayla Sawchuk, 13, of Prince Albert, had two solid rounds of 88-85 to win the MJT Girls Division title, making it look easy. “I play the MJT because of the competition with others,” stated Sawchuk. “I am just trying to hit the ball straight, have fun and enjoy the game right now.” Finishing in second place was Erykah Pool, 13, followed by Avery Wilson, 14, both of Swift Current, SK.

The Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition in each division was won by Kristian Houk, Blake Morrow of Swift Current, Ryan Gobiel of Regina, and Avery Wilson. Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions were won by Jace Normand of Meadow Lake, SK, Cole Zawislak of Regina, Cameron Mugford of Prince Albert, and Erykah Pool, who also won her division’s Golf Town Comeback Award; the other recipients were Griffin Wilson and Logan Tisdale of Swift Current and Justin Wood of Unity, SK.

The MJT Saskatchewan schedule continues with the MJT Saskatchewan Series at The Legends Golf Club in Warman on June 28-29, 2012, which is also a qualifying event for the Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT) Notre Dame event. For more information please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
