First-time winners dominate MJT’s Pitt Meadows stop

For Immediate Release – Pitt Meadows, BC – (September 10, 2012) – It was great to see three first-time winners and one repeat champion win their respective age divisions in the Boston Pizza-presented Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) British Columbia Fall One-Day Series at Pitt Meadows Golf Club in Pitt Meadows, this past Sunday, September 9th, where despite some heavy rain, the full field of junior golfers battled through and some fine scores were recorded.

After competing on the tour for four years in over 20 tournaments, Cole Briggs, 15, of Langley, BC, and a junior at Langley Golf Centre, fired 72 for his first MJT title, winning low overall and the MJT Boys 14-16 division. “The key was making clutch putts and staying calm when I had an ‘off’ shot, not making any big mistakes,” he said. “It feels really good (to win), staying calm and grinding it out paid off.” Runner-up in this division was Cam McAllister, 14, of Gibsons, BC, and Sunshine Coast Golf Club, who shot 74. There was a tie for third place at 78 between Capilano Golf Club’s Nicholas Lewis, 14, of West Vancouver, BC, and Eric Wan, 16, of Vancouver and Savage Creek Golf Club.

Nk’mip Canyon Golf Club junior, Victor Baptiste, 17, of Oliver, BC, fired 75 to win his first MJT title, claiming the Boys 17-19 division by one stroke over Sean Park, 17, of Coquitlam, BC, and Swan-e-set Bay Resort (76). “My highlight was making a five foot putt on 18 for a birdie,” said Baptiste, a five-year MJT veteran. “It makes me feel good to win on the MJT for the first time.” Third place in the division went to another tour veteran, Gunntas Sidhu, 17, of Port Coquitlam, who carded 77.

First-time winner in the MJT Boys 13 and Under division was Khan Lee, 12, of Surrey, BC, and Surrey Golf Club, who shot 73 from the white tees to edge last year’s champion, A.J. Ewart, 13, of Coquitlam and Pitt Meadows Golf Club, by one stroke. “It feels great to win because all the hard effort I’ve done this is the result,” said Lee. Third place went to 11 year-old Raymond Li of Vancouver and Savage Creek Golf Club, who carded 77.

MJT veteran Keanna Mason, 16, of Maple Ridge, BC, enjoyed her home course advantage and repeated as MJT Girls Champion in a tightly contested division, firing 75 to edge runner-up Ashley Cai, 13, of Vancouver and Point Grey Golf Club, by one. “My key to winning today was my tee shots. I hit 13 of 14 fairways today, giving me great opportunities to hit greens,” said Mason. “I just wanted to birdie the last hole and I did. It feels good to finish my year off with a win, especially at my home course.” Tiffany Kong, 11, of Vancouver and Fraserview Golf Club, shot 77 to finish in third place.

In the Mr. Lube Long Drive Contest, winners in each division were A.J. Ewart, Alex Park of Vancouver, Gunntas Sidhu and Keanna Mason. The Sundog Eyewear Closest to the Pin division winners were Ben Basran of West Vancouver, James Kim of Langley, Ryan Hunt of Pitt Meadows and Kelly Selvaraja of Mission, BC. The Golf Town Comeback Awards went to a player in each division who improved the most strokes on the back nine versus the front nine, and were won by Cameron Coates of Chase, BC, James Kim, Tyler Roope of Langley, and Susan Wang of Vancouver. There were also dozens of draw prize winners.

The last stop on the MJT British Columbia schedule this season is the MJT Prodigy Series at Pagoda Ridge Golf Club in Langley, BC, on October 6th. For full details, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
