Hawken off to Notre Dame following MJT win at Red Deer

Red Deer, AB – (July 29, 2012) – Two perfect days of weather and an incredibly manicured golf course marked another great event on the MJT Alberta schedule when Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) players were treated to an old-time classic over the July 28 and 29 weekend at the Red Deer Golf and Country Club (RDG&CC) in Red Deer, AB, where history and tradition still mean a lot. A classic test with narrow tree-lined fairways and small greens, the Red Deer club lived up to the billing as juniors from British Columbia and Alberta competed for titles in four age divisions and the chance to qualify for a spot in the Future Collegiate World Tour’s (FCWT) Notre Dame University event in South Bend, Indiana, USA this October.

Brett Hawken, 17, of Wetaskiwin, AB, claimed the MJT Boys 17-19 gold medal and Low Overall Honours, winning the exemption into the FCWT Notre Dame University event with funding provided by the MJT and International Events Sponsor, Travel Underwriters. “I scrambled and putted well this weekend,” he said. “It feels good to win. It is nice to win overall low, not just my division!” Runner-up in this division with two solid rounds of 79-72 was Brandon Hogue, 17, of Leduc, AB, followed by John McKiernan, 18, of Calgary, AB, who carded 77-75 to take home the bronze medal.

The MJT Boys 14-16 gold medal went to Scott McNichol of Calgary, who played two solid rounds of 74 to edge out Derek Roach, also of Calgary (77-72) and first round leader Brett Pasula of Red Deer (72-77), by one shot. McNichol, 16, said “I was just trying to hit aggressive, smart shots coming down the stretch. Derek and Brett are good players and I didn’t know if pars were going to be good enough. It is nice to see my hard work is finally paying off.”

12-year-old local Chandler McDowell took home the Boys 13 and under gold medal after firing rounds of 76-74 to edge out Brendan Brown, 13, of Calgary, who carded 74-80 for a solid weekend. “It feels good to win my division at my home golf course,” said McDowell of his victory, adding, “The course was in such good condition, I hope everyone enjoyed it.” Finishing third in the division was Michael Lavorato, 13, of Calgary, who carded rounds of 79-78.

Calgary’s Shannon Raina, 19, had two solid rounds of 87-87 to win the Girls Division title over Emily Creaser, 15, of Edmonton, AB (87-92), in a close race. “I played pretty well this weekend,” stated Raina. “It was a great golf course.” Finishing third in the Girls division was Rayna Oosterhuis, 16, of Edmonton, who played well, shooting 96-96.

The Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition in each division was won by Brendan Brown, Brett Pasula, Emily Creaser and Brandon Hogue of Leduc, AB, while the divisional Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competitions were won by Brendan Brown, Doug Whitten of Medicine Hat, AB, Kolby Vold of Ponoka, AB, and Annabelle Ackroyd of Calgary. Golf Town Comeback Awards went to Devin Kucy of Camrose, AB, Ethan Rimmer of Fort McMurray, AB, Brice Laidler of Edmonton, and Rachel Clark of Edmonton.

The MJT Alberta schedule continues on August 7,8 and 9 with the 54-hole MJT-PGA of Alberta Junior Championship at McKenzie Meadows Golf Course in Calgary. For more information, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
